Labels, Noise and the summertime ...

Ciao!

I had signed one week ago with Elec Trip Records (distributed by EMI - Kent) a very cool Turkish indie label, plus signing a license deal with Muzak Inc. for 15 instrumental tunes (including 'just friends?' and 'strawberry lips'); I am kind of freaking out waiting for the answers from Universal and Deep Emotions (nice Indian publishing company), I feel like a Napoleone - wannabe!

I had meet Matt Treasure from Milan and chatted with Japanese friends on MSN, while Charles from NBC is putting me on the list for a cool film scoring test to be made using 007 unedited video footage ... groovy ;-)
while it seems PHOTOSONIC didn't make it this year for the Sound Unseen Film Festival (I'm still waiting Emily's email as she had asked in a first time for a promo copy of my movie, but she has never emailed back...)

I am planning to release late summer an ambient EP based on some ideas I had got while waiting at the departure gates of European and Asian airports ... the pre production has started one year ago while I was hanging out at the KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) with a paper and a pen ... it doesn't have anything to do with the Brian Eno concept album. I will post some cuts as soon as the project will take a serious shape ...

I remember: during 2005, at the RipArte artfair (Rome, Italy), a 3 dvd set project called 'Noise - White - Pink - Blue' was presented for MVG Gallery. Here are some shoots from the videos (a totally empiric study on the video feedback signal used as filter effect for guitar sounds):

from White Noise; the effect was really close to some Arp sculptures!

Pink Noise is more dreamy, horizontal and vertical pink lines that shakes following and electric wind pulse ...

Blue Noise is water like waves that crashes at the bottom of the screen ... the sound effect is aquatic and liquid too.

Not very sure about my actual relation with Mja ... it's a trouble making situation really close to a bomb that is goin' to explode pretty soon ... (woa!) at least thanks to this situation I had the pleasure to enjoy pure inspiration and record 'just friends?', 'the lovers' and 'strawberry lips' in less then a week.

DJ Victor Masi is keeping in touch too for future dates in Sanremo and Cannés to be announched soon ...

Ehm ... DJ Victor Masi 'lost in the sound'! - www.VictorMasi.com

I'm truly under pressure waiting to know an answer from the A&R of the Koch Musikverlage (a Universal Music Company), and Mr. Achille from Deep Emotions (India) ..... meeting long time friend Victor Masi in Genova to discuss future plans about live gigs and remixes has been like breathing fresh air in a sunny day!

Ms. Strawberry Hikki is keeping in touch, wondering if Gianna Nannini's "Grazie" is a smash hit in Italy; Hikki (or Kitty) has shooted (and acted in) Gianna's video in Harajuku, Tokyo. I truly like her post J Pop style (check out her blog at http://strawberryhikki.blog68.fc2.com/ to have an idea).

This is an article written by journalist Lorenzo Tiezzi about the Cannès performance:

18/5: Victor Masi e Julyo fanno ballare Johnny Depp e Sharon Stone al
Festival di Cannes usando tanti vinili e una chitarra che produce
immagini...

PHOTO IN HI RES: www.lorenzotiezzi.it sezione VICTOR MASI

(International Frequently Quarter) magazine, rivista americana dedicata
saranno attori come Sharon Stone e Johnny Depp.

top club come l'Echoes (Misano Adriatico), quest'estate spesso guest

musica direzionarci, sempre però all'interno dell'house music. E

all'11 maggio a New York (Village East Cinema di Manhattan), il Sound

Being in control is not easy when you are a wannabe newyorker!

I was in AWESOME New York for the screening of Photosonic at NYC Independent Film Festival 2006 and, also, to perform at Stereo Club, Delancey and Libation (by the way the gig at Stereo was really crazy!)

[Eimear I love you!]

So I had the pleasure to meet producer/musician Keith Patchell (the picture of me is taken in his studio in the East side of Manhattan), eating pizza and having breakfast in Brooklyn, very close to my YMCA small room (Greenpoint area, what a cool area now)

Spent some great time at the Monkey Town with VJ/video artist Eric Dunlap, and meeting Artists Collective director Liz Lazarus (from Tokyo!) at the Delancey gig; we'll get back on that meeting for my upcoming partecipation at first AC Tokyo collective during summer in Tokyo, Japan.

I had even showed up at Westminister/Sperone Gallery for my video and meet Charles Moore of NBC, at NBC studios (still working on the Late Night stuff now)

________________________________________________________________

Hi Joseph,

thanks for coming to see PHOTOSONIC at the New York Independent Film Festival, and thanks for the kind words!
I'll try to answer your question by explaining the symbolic language I had used in PHOTOSONIC, although you have to keep in mind that I had tried to be a medium of the Event ... this means that each element has created the language of PHOTOSONIC, and later on I had 'transcribed' the final result (as in music, by in reverse, first the recording after the transcription).
Here we go:

The starting point for the visual language of PHOTOSONIC was the book "ABC of Colour" by M. A. Ragge from the British School of Color (you can see the cover below)

As PHOTOSONIC is 'the product of an event', the ABC of Color has been part of the whole picture since the first moment.
In the opening of the book M. A. Ragger shows a 'color hexagon' to illustrate the 'harmonic language of colors', hues from Yellow to Blue - Violet. In the following pages the author underlines certain specific areas of the hexagon showing the points that generates Triads (primary and secondary colors), Families (yellow - magenta/red - blue/green and blue/violet, red/orange and green) and Color Harmonies (not less then 3, not more than 9 adjacent complementary colors)
The fascinating thing is that the same 'numerical and spacial' symbolic method used to map the 'colors harmony' can be used to show the Child - Adult - Artist triadic process of Born - Sleep - Awake followed by the PHOTOSONIC character in order to achieve Illumination.

Here I'll show in details what I mean:

Child starts with three white balls representing the three senses related to Memory (the third one is Brain), so that the big black strokes in the drawing are the senses related with the perception of the external environment (mainly connected with eyes, ears and skin), while the small black strokes are those three 'Memory senses'.
The white hexagon where the character is standing is (also) representing the harmony at the origin, the 'balance of the sixth senses', the harmony that gets broken when the character is generated and enters the 'sensible world' (as when a child is born).
In a way it can be seen as the 3 senses related to the perception of the environment are the 3 primary colors, while the 3 related to memory are the secondary ones.

Adult is the phase where the character awakes his sixth sense (and learns how to use correctly the 4th and 5th ones), by experiencing synesthesia.
Synesthesia is when we use two or more senses at the same time while perceiving an event or an information (hearing sounds while looking a drawing or having a flashback while tasting food are good examples); in PHOTOSONIC the source of synesthesia, both for the character and the viewer, is the 'photosonic guitar', a software/hardware music instrument that allows to 'translate notes into colors'.
The symbol shows how the 'awakening' senses related to Memory are connected with the stimulation that makes them awake (here the 'photosonic guitar'), this can be viewed in the frames before the 'switching vinyl scene'.

in Artist the opening scene shows the sculpture named 'The Wakening of the 6th Sense', (conceived during my permanence in Tokyo in 2005).
Like the 'Color Harmonies' symbol in the "ABC of Color" book, the sculpture shows the the result of achieving a complete awakening through the opening of a wound (as in philosophers Joe Bousquet and Gilles Deleuze).
The wound here is a physical injury represented by the cut located on the mouth area of the main character (that doesn't have a real human mouth before the awakening)
If we look at 'The Wakening of the 6th Sense' from the back/side view we see three elements: the Photosonic Guitar, the 'S' piercing and the main character with the 'mouth - injury'.
From the 'open cut' (or 'open mouth') a cascade of silver picks creates a 'pentagon - like' figure, the shape is not really the point, the goal is to show how the center (the 'S' piercing) is dominant and the rest is subordinate (as in the "ABC of Color' symbol for colors harmony).
During the last scene of the Adult Phase (the guitar solo scene), the main characters experienced full synesthesia while performing a musical climax; the Event makes the character 'the Son of the Event', now ready to generate the 'Artwork'.
The 'S' piercing lies on the center of the hexagon, it is the product of the wound, the injured mouth is no longer capable to hold it.

It means: "the way to achieve Illumination is always standing on the tip of our tongue, all living things can experience it by becoming conscious of their Wound" (as also in Zen philosophy)

ok

Cannés is cool and nobody's wrong about trying to catch attention while the superstars are hanging out on the Croisetté (the main street infront of the sea in Cannés)
the wannabe stars are welcome to drink champagne and get funkie with the groupies ... BUT
BUT
I wasn't so much sourrounded by THAT kind of exploding sense of life and creativity that I was expecting, the same one you can experience at MIDEM or at WCM (in Miami, Florida)
by the way it was good, and the gig at Maema Plage was (maybe) even too much easy to do
Victor and me where disappointed about the IFQ Magazine organization, the PR and all that kind of behind-the-scenes team that is supposed to work hard to achieve an high level entertainment night ....

The view of Cannés from the apartment I was staying during my permanence, nice weather.

Close up with one of the 'photosonic paintings' in the back (Child Phase)

I truly would love to say hi to Chyntia Tourand of Metro Magazine (je t'aime ala follie mon amour!), and to Mr. Showtime, for the great time and the funky time at the Cannés private parties somewhere inside the city.

CONVERSATIONS ep (2003)
GD Seventy Eight Music Inc.

Oh well
Yes
(it's not Elvis or Village People)

It's the cover of the CONVERSATIONS ep, released during 2003, Boston, MA (USA)

I had released this all-acoustic EP during my Berklee College year, it was printed in a very limited edition (300 copies?), and promoted in CT on the radio show 'The Upper Room with Joe Kelley'.

At the time I was sponsored by C.F. Martin guitars (still my fav acoustic brand), and one rainy day I had got this awesome email with the picture of CONVERSATIONS on the Martin Wall Of Fame in Nazareth, PA.
Here is that amazing picture:

actually they had putted the retro of the booklet cover CD that is the one on the left side ...

CONVERSATIONS was recorded at Civitas Studios (Boston) one day recording session, all tracks first take (except for the 'xenocrony' thing, one guitar was old tapes stuff). Recorded and mixed by Jack Speciale (what a man!), the pictures where taken actually by his girlfriend at the time, Roby Finocchiaro.

It was such a freaky period for me, I was managed by Angela Smart for Eagle Entertainment, my lawyer was [ops I don't remember the name] and I was also making some music under the name 'Vega78' for a film director named ... Ray Guhn (yes I did it).

Still waiting to know more about birds from Mr. Banacos ...

ah

during the same period I had published on TrueFire.com two guitar lessons, if you got time check them out!

http://truefire.com/list.html?store=audio_lessons&viewauthor=3569

and ...

before my permanence at Berklee College, I had released another all-acoustic EP called 'Travels' (mainly recorded in Holmdel, NJ), here is a review of the album (sorry only in Italian):

GD Giulio D’Agostino - TRAVELS Mp3 (26’10)

Hi all here we go!

in this blog i will basically post everything that matters to is (and will) happen in my 'so-called' artist life .... this means you can read and keep in touch with news (more than on my website 'cause it can be censored), cool pics on the fly (like kinky parties and stuff like that) and, of course, MORE music, clips from current productions and ideas!

the picture on the top has been taked at the Mori Tower, Roppongi Hills in (wonderfull) Tokyo, Japan. I was goin' to perform at MOJOs with DJ Vika and we were shooting randomly while watching at a video by D Type on the wall of the Mori Cinema

also....

during my last days in Tokyo I had the immense pleasure to perform live at ADM Club Ikebukuro with awesome B.A.R.D.O. band! Featuring Jimisen on guitar, plus other superheroes on drums (hey!), saxphone and keyboards .... a DVD has been taped, hopefully I will post some short cuts of that video (that has a very bad light :-(

and, and, and ...

the COZMO Bar [www.cozmoscafe.com] (in Shibuya, Tokyo... hi Ronna!) has gently feature on the opening page of their website a photo with me and DJ Vika, you can see a snapshot here:

about Kharisma ....

well everybody knows I was supposed to stay in Tokyo for a month or so to perform a mini promotional tour with my ex band/rock trio KHARISMA, so for anyone whom wants to have an idea of what KHARISMA was about, here are some links ....

KHARISMA's self-titled debut represent what European rock is all about: catchy one riff tunes and rock ballads performed live by a rock trio - The KHARISMA is a rock duo formed in Boston, US during the summer of 2002 by songwriter/bass player/singer Giulio 'GD' and drummer Guerrino dal Lago. After 2 years of doing all that it takes to develop a large fan base, including grass-roots promotion, touring, and releasing one self produced promo, the European-based KHARISMA are in full stride with their first official record, KHARISMA, the album is a natural progression for Kharisma' propulsive hook-packed rock which debuted on their self-titled promo (2001). Primary songwriter GD has found that the key to successful writing is writing what he experience in his life. Throughout college and beyond, GD's music has been an alloy of sounds from the European contemporary rock scene resulting in music that is at once pop, rock, and punk that appeals to adventurous rock fans. The influence of artists such as Police, the Clash, and '90s hard rock is immediately apparent yet serve as suggestions rather than blueprints for the Kharisma' style. It is the timelessness of their songs that is the constant.

The following is a VERY old interview I did for the online webzine HotBands.com; I was 18, making the first steps in the exciting world of the 'traveling musicians' ;-)

Giulio D'Agostino - Genova, Italy - by HotBands Editor - Pat Ferris

HotBands.com is breaking new ground again in the music industry by introducing the first (that I know of) bi-lingual eZine review!
A young man by the name of Giulio D'Agostino, also known as "GD" contacted our office via email and within minutes of our reply, he was contacting us again. I gave him my private ICQ number to find out a little more about this ambitious musician from Genova Italy.

What I found out next was a few things:
A. He was one of the hardest working people I've seen in the music industry so far. He constantly promotes himself and has utilized every resource (specifically, free resources) to market himself to a global audience. Selling music and products that market himself.

B. His growing list of contacts, collaborations, and celebrity association was growing quickly for a 21 year old.

C. He wasn't going to take "let me get to you later" as an answer! He persisted in contacting me, giving me info on what he was doing, etc until I took an interest in his project.

GD is a bright and talented musician who's musical style is nearly ambient classical with a Euro-flavor.

So what does that mean? Beats me! It is the best description I could come up with while listening to his music in the background...it was relaxing to listen to. Interesting female background vocals in English with an Italian accent. If you take a listen at any one of his many websites, you can see for yourself.

His official website lacked the sparkle that I've seen on some websites that some bands are coming out with, but the thing that set GD apart was how well he was networked! He had several different websites all linked up through different on-line distrubution sources as well as portals like HotBands.com. Other bands can definitly learn from his example on getting known!

We got together for a short interview the other day, and here are some of his thoughts.

Hi there!

Hi Pat

What is your first name? I only know you as "GD"

My complete name is Giulio D'Agostino

And you are from the city of Genova which is north of Milan?

No, Genova is close to Milan, that is more considered as the 'Fashion City'

I think I have you listed in Genova right now. Is that the correct city for you?

Yes, I live much more in Genova, that is the city where I was born.

How old are you at this time? What instrument do you play?

Now i'm 21, I've began to play guitar and sing at the age of 16

You've said you are doing much with some pretty big names in the music business.
Can you give me a list of the artists you have worked with, and how you got that gig?

Yes, recently I've done a complete production for Finland Pop Star, Steven Stewart and I've done many gigs with Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie's guitarist). I've had many artists compliment my music, including David Bowie, Prince and recently David Cassidy

How did you get an audience with these people?

All my musical history began thanks to the help of Ron Bienstock, that's Joe Satriani's manager he began a good promotion of my music. After my music was published on MP3.COM my manager began to contact them. They visited my site, listend to my music and so on. That's how they got to know my name for my shows

Where do you perform the most?

Well, the past few years I've performed only in Italy, for fashion shows, and some live concerts, but this year, if the SXSW people like my style and songs, I have intentions to perform in the UK, US and of course Finland!

What is the largest audience you've performed for to date?

My best performance is a totally sold out show last summer for more than 15.000 people

How many DAM CD's have you sold over MP3? Do you have regular CD's out too?

Yes, recently, I've began a serious push to sell CD trough the Net. My Page is normally visited by more than 1500 people every day and making decent money. Infact, I've now sold more CD's online than to the audience of my live shows!

Wow, 1500 hits a day is quite a bit of traffic! Would you say the majority of people visit your site from Italy, or are you more known in Finland and northern Europe?

My site is well visited by all people around the world I'm more know for the fact that I'm the really one of the only ones in Italy that is well know in all the parts of the world, thanks to the Net and other medias

U know that I'll have several bands from Italy reading this, and maybe they' have seen you??

yes, I know many Italian bands, some of them compose interesting music

Would you say there is much of a music scene in Italy for live artists?

I think that our situation is simply different in respect to the rest of the world. In Italy you can perform music and be the best artist but if you aren't a good-looking artist, or a trend artist, the labels will not produce you. Outside of Italy, for example in Finland, the marketing and the showbiz will remain the same but same people will think totally differently, and, produce music in a "art's for art's sake" - way of thinking

How would you say the music coming out of Italy and central Europe differs from what is coming out of other parts of the world? It seems to me that there is a lot of good stuff coming out of all over the world, and there seems to be a "sound" for each region.

yes, i agree but I think that many trends are born first in London or the United States; for example, Europop is a creation of the European MTV... Every nation possess its own sound after people will decide if it's good to listen or trend to consume, and the labels will show their artist more or less, depend to the people request...

In the US, Seattle is known for a hard grunge sound, the South is known for blues/country rock like the Allman Brothers or ZZ Top, and Los Angeles is an Afro-Latin funk area, Detroit is known for Mo-Town and NYC seems to be pumping out a lot of rap. How would you classify YOUR music and how would you compare it to the majority of music coming from Italy...or is Italy's sound broken up by regions much as it is here (This is a generality, and I'm aware there is all types of music coming from all areas)

well, the only difference in Italy for music is between South or North Italy... in the North Italy the well know artist are trend artist

Trend Artists like in Techno/Electronic pop?

More like dance and commercial dance music. In central Italy, people love punk and power pop, and in the South part of Italy people love punk and hardcore metal, or every kind of hard rock bands... Recently, Rome has exploded in trend...Fusion between punk, metal and hard alternative like Smashing Pumpkins

Have you heard of SOS Band? Metal seems to be most of the bands I've talked with from Milan

I've read some about SOS, but i don't remember clearly them.

I've chatted with Bruco from SOS band, and he seems to be quite a character as a front-man for a band, and they seem to have a great following there as well. yes, but in Italy sometimes the underground music is not so well know as the music
showed by the majors. Unfortunately, this is a fact of life here, so many bands emigrate to the UK.

I would like more bands from Italy on our site, and perhaps after I edit this interview, you can help me translate it into Italian so I can offer it in your native language

right Pat, I'll be very happy to help you in this! I'm open to any information about music and ways distribute it globally

There are a lot of cool sites right now that are making the record industry (or at least the United States record industry) very nervous. MP3.com, Napsters...these are a couple of them that have been targeted on the RIAA "black list".

yes, but the musical revolution has just begun, and no one else will stop it! The new era will be ruled by the consumer and NOT by the big labels...people will buy what they want and not what the labels THINK they want.

That's what I've been saying for a while. I'm an economist by education, and I think it's about time that the music industry was demand driven rather than supply driven.

Yes, the future in the music industry is to be driven by the artists. Many of my best shows have been totally managed by myself. I feel the future of the majors will be only in the distribution or promotion tips...if Internet will not replace them totally! Internet is the new way to comunicate with fans and many great artist are just beginning to use it.

As cable and DSL (high speed) lines become more commonplace and computers become more powerful and affordable, you will really start to see a BIG change in the way music is delivered over the net. Websites will become more and more interactive, and you'll be able to see MTV type movies put out by indie bands on their own websites...this will be kind of like turning your own website into your own MTV channel. The traffic will be driven by portals such as HotBands.com, and music will be streamed over internet radio 24 hours a day. HotBands just signed a deal to get internet radio on our site and we should be streaming music from all over the world in the next week or so.

This is the future Pat. That's great about internet radio on your site.

What type of music would you classify yourself?

Most part of my production are pop rock tune, but, due to the fact that many of my well know songs are glam, instrumental pop and alternative, I prefer to be known more as a pop (general pop) composer...in line with Andy Wharol's pop philosophy

At the time being, does your management have you booked for any tours of Europe, Italy, or elsewhere?

My management is really interested in do some live shows in US this summer. I've received an offer by ECM for some instrumental's live in German, also for this summer, but i'm much more interested in do a live show in the US. I've work for PTV recently

Is there anything else you want to say for the interview?

finally i would invite people to visit my Web Page! Infact, everyone can go to www.mp3.com/gd and after, go to my other project called VEga 78; an alternative band promoted and fronted by myself

Thanks again G!!

bye and thank you very much Pat! See ya!
